Finance Officer

Job Overview 

St. James Missionary Baptist Church is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Finance Officer to oversee our day-to-day financial operations. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in finance and bookkeeping, ensuring that our resources are managed with integrity to support the various departments and ministries of our church.  This person will report to the Church Administrator.

Core Responsibilities

To ensure the financial health and transparency of the organization, the Finance Administrator will: 

  • Financial Reporting: Prepare comprehensive financial statements, monthly/quarterly reports, and budget forecasts to provide leadership with insights into financial performance.
  • Transaction Management: Manage all payroll, accounts receivable and accounts payable; receive and record funds from various sources, including mail-in contributions and electronic deposits.
  • Data Entry & Records: Maintain accurate spreadsheets of daily transactions; process and input vouchers into the church’s accounting system. 
  • Compliance & Reimbursements: Review, process, and track all reimbursement requests in accordance with church policy, via Quickbooks.
  • Resource Allocation: Effectively manage and allocate financial resources to appropriate departments and ministries to ensure mission alignment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education: Two- or four-year college degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or Management.
  • Professional Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in office administration, financial bookkeeping (payroll/reconciliations), and facilities coordination; Proven background in Finance, Accounting, or Bookkeeping.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in accounting software and advanced knowledge of Excel/spreadsheets.
  • Integrity: A commitment to maintaining confidentiality and high ethical standards in handling church funds.

Position Details

  • Type: Part-Time (Up to 32 hours per week).
  • Schedule: Monday–Thursday, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM (includes a 1-hour unpaid lunch).
  • Compensation: $40,000 – $48,000 (commensurate with experience).
  • Reports To: Operations Manager and Church Administrator

Technical Skills & Abilities

  • Advanced Accounting: Mastery of QuickBooks Online (or recent desktop versions); experience with automated payroll and tax filing.
  • Church Management Systems (ChMS): Proficiency in modern church databases (e.g., Shelby, Planning Center, Church Community Builder, or Breeze) for membership and contribution tracking.
  • Microsoft Office Suite 365/Google Workspace: Advanced knowledge of Word/Docs, Excel/Sheets (data analysis), and PowerPoint/Slides. Experience with Microsoft Publisher or Canva for digital bulletins is a plus.
  • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal skills, with a focus on professional etiquette and interpersonal emotional intelligence.
  • Equipment: Ability to operate standard office equipment, i.e., printers, fax machines, USPS stamp machines, etc.
